To earn this patch each Girl Scout must complete activities from each of the categories listed below:
The purpose of the activities for earning this patch is to help educate, and re-enforce, the teachings of Sadaqah in the Girl Scouts of the Islamic Faith and members of their community just as our beloved Prophet sal Allahu alaihe wa sallam (may the Blessings and Peace of Allah be upon him) taught us to do.
The term 'sadaqah' in Islam is not just about giving charity. It refers to acts that is pleasing to the One and Only Creator, and which is a benefit for all of mankind. The acts of Sadaqah are mandatory for all Muslims. Knowing and understanding the different acts of Sadaqah will help the Muslimah in her acts of worship. When the Girl Scout of the Islamic Faith finishes these activities for this patch, she will in shaa Allah:
The word 'sadaqah' means Charity in Islam. The act of giving charity in Islam is a deed that is considered very noble and virtuous and all Muslims, who participate in it, whether the rich or the poor, or the young, and the old – everyone gets the reward for taking the time, and making the effort, to perform the acts of Sadaqah.
Your patch represents six different types of Sadaqah. Try your best to fulfill all, or most, of the requirements for your Sadaqah Patch or, at least, be able to recognize these acts when others around you perform them.
Learn from someone of knowledge about the different types and meanings of Sadaqah. Explore examples from the Quran and Sunnah.
Ask your parents, imam, leaders or teachers about the meaning of Sadaqah. Understanding the concept is the first step to practicing it.
Ask what things they do that can be considered as Sadaqah. Make a list of them. Discover the many forms of charity in daily life.
Read a story to a younger level Girl Scout troop about someone giving Sadaqah, or have a story read to you about an act of Sadaqah that was performed by the Last Messenger of Almighty Allah (sAws).
Share with someone an act of Sadaqah that the Prophet Mohammad (sAws) performed. Spread knowledge about the beautiful character of the Prophet.
Design a poster to show the kinds of acts of Sadaqah you did for a week. Hang it up in your meeting place. Visual tracking helps reinforce positive habits.
Memorize and learn about a Surah from the Quran al-Kareem, or a hadith from the Sunnah of Rasul Allah (sAws), pertaining to the act of Sadaqah. Deepen your understanding through sacred texts.
Put your knowledge into practice by performing acts of kindness, conservation, and good character. Small daily actions make a big difference.
Find ways to conserve energy and save time, money and eliminate waste (for example, don't run the water when you are brushing your teeth, turn the light off when you leave the room, etc.). Conserving resources is a form of charity to the earth and future generations.
Plant a tree, or participate in a tree/flower planting activity in your neighborhood. Beautify the earth and create lasting benefit for others.
As a troop, donate an agreed amount from your cookie sale to the masjid. Share your earnings for a good cause.
Learn different ways that you can give Sadaqah (this means, spending from what you have to help others). Charity comes in many forms, not just money.
Practice telling the truth at all times. Honesty is a form of charity to yourself and others.
Do small things, for example, opening the door for someone who is having difficulty doing so, or by volunteering to help your struggling classmate understand the homework, etc. Small acts of kindness are great acts of Sadaqah.
Respect your parents and elders by talking politely, by helping out, and by controlling yourself. Respect and good character are forms of charity.
Respect your home and place of worship by keeping them clean, organized and peaceful. Maintaining cleanliness is a form of worship.
Make a tangible difference in your community through service projects, donations, and helping those in need. These actions create lasting positive impact.
Collect and distribute non-perishable food items to 2 local pantries in your community. Help those in need with essential items and make a direct community impact.
Participate in a community cleanup as a troop. Clean up a one-block area around your Masjid or a place of meeting. For 2-4 meetings, as a troop, help clean up inside the meeting area. Environmental stewardship is an important form of charity.
Sponsor one, or two, girls from a needy Muslim family who wants to join your troop, but is unable to afford the registration. Help others participate in Girl Scouting and empower them.
Pay for earning patches for needy Girl Scouts of the Islamic Faith. Support fellow scouts in their journey and educational pursuits.
Say a kind word to your Muslim sister or a stranger. Kind words are ongoing charity and provide emotional support.
Remember Allah Subhaanahu wa ta'ala (Perfect and Exalted) much in your actions, for example: make extra Dhikr after each salah you perform; say salaams to your Muslim sister when you meet her; smile and hug your mother when you see her; do something nice for your friend; move harmful things out of someone's path; make a gift for your father, mother, grandparents, aunts or uncles.
Help someone who is sick, or old, by visiting them and taking some food for them. Caring for the vulnerable is highly rewarded and shows compassionate care.
Think, and then perform, as many good deeds as you can. Every good deed is counted as charity and creates continuous rewards.
Invite a friend who is feeling sad for dinner and then say good things to cheer them up. Bringing joy to others is a form of Sadaqah that supports emotional wellbeing.
Encourage others to give Sadaqah to the masjid. Spreading the practice of charity multiplies the reward and builds community spirit.
